Jay Kirkman:
As a regular at northern racecourses, I have sketched Graham many times during his amazing career. My late wife backed him in Amberleigh House’s National – which was our best day on any course. I was at Newcastle when he suffered his accident – which was the worst day.
This painting began at Craig Lidster’s yard where he was kind enough to have Lydia stand the horse for me. Even with such expert handling, there’s a natural limit to how long a spirited 2yo will co-operate with having her portrait made. A good start was made on paper which I subsequently mounted for all the studio work.
The silks are based on the same pattern of Graham’s English Grand National winner Amberleigh House. These colours are part of the horse’s identity and are meant to compliment the portrait. In my mind, these also tell a visual story of energy and positive purpose emerging from darkness. Also, have taken the liberty of introducing as much vivid colours as possible in the filly & racing reins so the palette of white, green & orange mirrors the flag of Graham’s native Ireland.
